The fall season is prime time for family, friends, and lots of food. Odds are, you’re still reeling from all the halloween candy you’ve been snacking on since early October. In the midst of caramel apple season and shutting yourself indoors to avoid the cold, you may have been neglecting your diet (and your waistline). To help you get back to that workout routine and shred worthy nutrition plan,we’ve got a few tips for healthy eating!
- Replace “Empty Carbs” with Vegetables
Ah yes, the “empty carb,” otherwise known as the cardinal sin of any diet. Humans need carbs to operate, there’s no other way around it. But if you’re finding yourself bloated and sluggish from all the rice and breads you’ve been stuffing, try the greens! Broccoli, zucchini, brussel sprouts, asparagus, and bell peppers are all a good source of carbohydrates. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, strawberries, bananas, blueberries, and oats are also a good “unhealthy carb” replacement. But unlike vegetables (which you can pretty much eat all day long), you should avoid eating too many fruits if you’re wanting to shed pounds.
- Indulge in Lean Proteins
Sorry to say, it may be time to take a break from beef. While lean beef is healthier than other red meats, it’s still not the best for your blood pressure or waistline. Cut the fat out for a time by eating more chicken, fish, eggs, and legumes. Black beans and almonds are a great alternative protein source when trying to cut down on heavy meats!
- Good Fats
Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are known as the “good fats” as they are better for your cholesterol and overall health. Olive, peanut, and sesame oils are a great addition to your diet. Not only are they a healthy source of fat, they contribute to a lower risk of heart attack and stroke. Avocado is also a wonderful healthy fat to indulge in. Breakout the avocado wheat toast when you’re on the go!
- Intermittent Fasting
If you absolutely must have a cheat day, balance your body with intermittent fasting. This form of fasting works by taking a few gap hours in between your meals. While many men are advised to fast for 16 (including sleep) and eat for 8, it’s best to do your research. Make sure you’re getting enough good nutrition and check with your doctor to see if intermittent fasting is right for you!
When it comes to healthy eating habits, you know what options lean you out the most. You’re also the most in tune with what vices you should be avoiding when whipping your nutrition into shape! A simple, final tip would be to explore more plant based options for a time. It’s not just about looks, you need to keep your heart and cholesterol sexy too! We want to encourage you to be your most awesome self, which is the most important. While looking your best is key to confidence, maintaining internal health is just as ideal.
